RSVP: Welcome/Orientation

Welcome to the Loyola Institute for Ministry, Fall 2020!

We are trying something new this year. We are trying an online welcome/orientation for all of our students who started sometime in 2020. It takes place on Tuesday August 18 at 7:00 p.m. CDT. You received the Zoom link in your welcome email. Please RSVP (attend even if you forget to RSVP).

Agenda (see details below):

  1. Prayer
  2. Introductions of people and program
  3. Brief Article Discussion
  4. Important information
  5. Questions

Introduction details: We see the Loyola Institute for Ministry as a learning community consistig of students, faculty, and staff. To build that learning community, we'd like our new students to meet us and each other. So, please be prepared to introduce yourself by bringing a symbol or an object that helps to identify who you are and how you want your classmates to know you--be creative and plan to be brief!

Article Discussion Details: Two important periodicals that contain reflective writing for people of faith are Commonweal and America. Commonweal often gives students free subscriptions; be on the lookout for that opportunity. Both are available for free through Loyola's library. If you have time (if you don't have time, don't worry), please read the article by Copeland or Hillis. Each tries to understand current events in light of Christianity's biblical and theological traditions. In addition to reading your article appreciatively and critically (what are its strengths; what questions do you have?), what do you learn from these articles about how you might bring the Christian tradition to bear on a situation of concern to you.

Questions: This is a time of transition in so many ways, and so if you have questions, you're surely not alone; so  please ask. Below is some information that may help answer your questions, but do bring questions to this event.

Advising FYI: Each of you either already has an advisor or will soon be assigned one. In the meantime, if you have an advising question, please contact Tom Ryan at tfryan@loyno.edu. Here is an Advising Guide for Undergraduates and for Graduate students.
