John was hired after Hurricane Katrina to take over a class and was asked to remain provided that he obtain an advanced degree. He had begun his studies at LIM, but had never completed them. He returned and obtained an MPS in 2009 and on that basis continues to teach courses in Religious Studies at Tulane. He teaches four courses on a rotating basis: Catholicism (a survey of Catholic beliefs and history), Paul and His Message (a survey of Paul's life and writings), The Papacy (a history of the Papacy and Catholic beliefs about the Papacy), and finally Jesus, A Life.
