A Human Connection
A professional counselor can play many roles: A mental health practitioner, a researcher, an administrator, a social justice advocate. But above all, a counselor is a person. A counselor’s area of expertise is building human connection.
This takes practice.
Students in our program receive hands-on learning experiences working with hired actors playing the role of their clients. They practice counseling skills first in a safe environment, one in which they can learn from their triumphs and mistakes. They receive consistent feedback and instruction from professors actively involved in the field.
They learn to connect, human to human.

Dr. Lauren Hunter and Blake Erskin Represent Loyola's Department of Counseling
Dr. Hunter and first year student, Blake Erskin, participated in a panel discussion hosted by Loyola's Career Center on "Pathways to a Career in Counseling". Joining them was Morgan Faust, PLPC, a school counselor at Holy Name of Jesus School, and Rebekah Cianci, LPC, BCBA, the director of Crescent City Bloom Consulting. Dr. Stillwell and Internship Student Sophia Bologna Present at First Annual Chronic Illness Therapist Conference
Faculty member, Dr. Sarah Stillwell, and third-year internship student, Sophia Bologna, traveled to Atlanta for the Chronic Illness Therapist Conference on March 6-7, 2026. They both presented, "A Clinician’s Guide to Getting Kinky with Chronic Conditions + Pain." This presentation explores the intersection of sexuality and chronic conditions. Congratulations to Dr. Stillwell and Sophia, we are proud of you!
