Frequently Asked Questions for our Doctor of Nursing Practice Program
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE ME TO COMPLETE THE ONLINE DNP PROGRAM?
The online BSN-to-DNP program is designed so that full-time students can complete all coursework within three years. The MSN-to-DNP program is designed to be completed within two years of full-time study. Post-master’s students may transfer up to 500 practicum hours to complete the required practicum required. Actual time to finish either degree can vary based on students’ personal and professional obligations.
HOW IS THE ONLINE DNP PROGRAM PRACTICUM STRUCTURED?
The Loyola online DNP practicum is specifically designed for students to apply the theory they have learned in class and challenge them to think at a higher level. The practicum requirements consist of 1,260 clock hours for BSN-to-DNP students or 1,000 clock hours for MSN-to-DNP. A preceptor-mentor model is used, so you will have an experienced health care professional guiding you.
WHAT KIND OF PRECEPTORS DO I NEED IN THE PROGRAM?
You will require preceptors with advanced degrees, such as physicians or nurse practitioners, or executives with titles such as CEO, CFO, or CNO. The type of preceptor needed will be largely dependent on the type of scholarly project planned or the type of clinical experience sought. There is much flexibility in preceptor choice.
HOW DO I FIND A PRECEPTOR?
There are many ways to locate preceptors. One way is to look at your own network of individuals with whom you have worked, and ask one (or several) of them to precept you. Another is to join professional groups where you can meet and network with potential preceptors: for example, nurse practitioner groups in your state or region, and one of the national groups, such as the American Association of NPs, the American Organization of Nurse Executives.
